Hannah Smith

WT Translational Neuroscience PhD student (2022 - present)

Hannah completed an Integrated MSc in Molecular Biology at Dundee University (2017 – 2021). During her honour’s year, Hannah worked as a research technician at the University performing molecular and behavioural assays with Drosophila melanogaster. She also undertook a summer studentship during her 3rd year to learn how to use python programming to analyse proteomic data. Hannah is a Wellcome Trust Translational Neuroscience PhD student at the University of Edinburgh (2021 – present). She is interested in the application of computational methods to try to better understand neurological conditions.

Under the supervision of Professor Riccardo Marioni, Hannah’s research project will involve using statistical techniques to combine several risk factors, epigenetic and proteomic data. She will describe the relationship between each of these with measurements of brain health in large patient groups. Her hope is to discover biomarkers of brain health that will help to identify individuals at risk of neurological disorders and cognitive decline.

Outside of work, Hannah enjoys playing football, cycling, and grabbing a coffee with friends. She also enjoys reading popular science books.
